Baby boomer life lessons learned in...Hooterville?

When I was a little one watching TV,
the shows were a whole different fare.
Not many Survivors or Bachelor boys,
and the women had really big hair.

Miss Kitty and Lucy wore redhead bouffants.
Laura Petrie and That Girl had bangs.
And when there were weddings, simplicity ruled,
and the gowns weren’t elaborate Wangs.

The animal stars were much bigger back then--
we watched Lassie and Arnold the swine.
And shows ‘bout the simple life ruled on the tube,
which suited most viewers just fine.

Divorce was a word not heard much at that time,
although “widowed” was often a theme.
Shirley Partridge and Julia had both their hands full--
single-parenthood their American dream.

My feminist leanings were fostered back then,
although sometimes I can’t figure how.
For the airwaves were littered with dominant males--
things weren’t nearly so PC, like now.

On Gilligan’s Island, Miss Ginger the diva
worried little ‘bout much but her tan.
But soon I was pleased to learn quite a few men
preferred girls who were more Mary Ann.

There were women with talents I didn’t possess--
like Samantha who ruled with a twitch.
But Jeannie worked magic with more of a blink
And no pesky Darrin/spouse switch.

Though sexy was popular, back then and now,
and tall blondes made all the men drool,
It was comforting knowing that Carol Burnett
made funny girls all-the-way cool.

Detectives, hard-boiled, were everywhere, Baby,
and most of the laughs then were canned.
But for these life lessons, I’m grateful, of course.
Now take me to my TV Land!
