For seniors, hunting is a more leisurely thriller as we exert a little more effort to pursue a much-loved sport

HUNTING FOR SENIORS

Another frosty morning, and my hunter's up at five;
The bed is warm and cozy; I barely feel alive,
So Mama keeps her eyes closed, not ready to wake up,
While Papa's out there stirring the coffee in his cup.

Been doing this so many years, he's good at being quiet;
He slips down to the basement without a sound - (You try it!)
He dresses for adventure, all ready for his prey;
The crossbow on his shoulder, six arrows tucked away.

A thermos in his left hand, a hot seat in his right,
My camo-clad old hunter treads softly thru the night.
His tree stand's waiting in the woods, unnoticed by the deer;
If they watched him clamber up, their hearts would pound with fear.

He settles down, my archer, at peace with all God's world,
And contemplates with wonder as daylight is unfurled.
This may not be the morning a big buck comes his way,
But he is fit and feisty for a senior's hunting day!

They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
they shall walk and not faint.

Isaiah 40:31

I'm not into hunting but I like your poem. I'm rooting for the poor buck.

I never hunted a deer
Not with a rifle nor bow and arrow.
They are too stately and too majestic
I never met a man with those qualities.

Although I was raised in a place where you’d think I would have developed a love for hunting—West Virginia—it never seemed to interest me. I don’t know the reason, It just didn’t. On the other hand, my oldest son and his youngest son both love the sport beyond words. I have always felt a sadness in my heart over my son not being able to share his deep love for hunting with me. If I had it to do over, I think I would have forced myself to take up hunting perhaps for his sake alone. Down through our years of parenting we all make mistakes we would like to undo. This is one of those mistakes I have carried with me over the years. We do have other things in common; however, this is one of those “biggies” that haunts me. I loved your poem, and the imagery it conjured within me has been with me throughout the entire day. You always write such wonderfully warm pieces. Of course, it goes without saying that the quote from Isaiah 40:31 is one of my favorites. Thank you for this superb piece.

I stopped bow hunting at 20, unable to pull my recurve bow back anymore to aim and shoot. But your poems stirred in me those days from 16 to 20 when waking up at five was the norm with a cup of coffee before heading out into the cold with hopes of crossing the path of a buck that day. Conjured up wonderful memory.

Do you know that your title could be read two ways? As one example: Young Russian women can be found on the Internet "Hunting for Seniors."
