Redheaded woodpecker,
Sittin’ on a fence!
Tryin’ to make a dollar,
Out o’ fifteen cents!
Got bored peckin’ wood
Started lookin’ for trouble,
Checked the neighborhood,
And saw his double!
Flew to my pickup truck
Saw himself in the glass
Drew back and struck
Other bird did smash!
Went to the other side,
Found a bird there too,
One he couldn’t abide,
Pecked it plumb through!
Lady birds came by
Lured him as friends.
Big pecker let a cry
Left me to make amends.
Two hundred fifty dollars billed,
Dollar was terribly inflated,
Love of woodpeckers killed!
(Perhaps killed overstated.)
When spring comes ‘round, mate,
Your mirrors, you’d better hide,
Or that big pecker you’ll hate,
Crackin' your side-views wide!

My Uncle Don once spotted a pileated in his Wisconsin woodlot and thought it rare. Glad to hear they are not endangered (except by your shotgun) in Virginy.

You got me. Blame the title. Nay, blame my curiosity...well...ummmm, errrrrrrrr...aroused by the title. LOL
Sorry about the truck. Birds can be very destructive...especially in Spring, during the mating season.
An original write, a cautionary "tail" very well penned.
(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
I'm sorry about your two hundred and fifty dollar bill :-( Still it provoked a great piece.

This is a fantastic report! "The Biggest Pecker" seems to be a good warning.
I enjoyed this unique story on "The Biggest Pecker".
I salute You, Poet!

You should get the local press to report it, and alert others to the possible danger and expense !
I have seen hawks and warblers flying straight into windows and glasshouses, and breaking their necks...:)
