The food chain operates from A at the top to Z at the bottom, with individuals of each class eating some individuals of those classes below. I’m calling this system an existential bane, though I have to admit that it is truly “the facts of life”.
The food chain, as managed by man,
Has been ordered, and limited a bit.
He resides at the top, as he can,
By dent of ancestors’ evolved wit.
Man has taken the chain further.
Even among his own kind —
Enslaved both beast and brother
To feed on their labors and mind.
On the chain “A” to “Z” in life’s dance,
“B”s can rise to “A”s and “A”’s can fall,
Due to unforseen circumstance —
Say — a caged tiger loosed in a mall.
Or tiny organisms human cells invade
Attacking good tissue out of sight.
What’s our position now, new-made?
It’s no longer at the “A” position, right?
Luxuriating from “A” on food chain,
A loving, personal god some see,
But, how, in existential bane,
Can that claim come from “B” thru ”Z”?
Oh, dear Leland! You are surely testing our gray-matter with this deep-thinking poetic "chain". Could it be we are fooling ourselves into believing we ARE "A"? We are what we eat, and that could reduce us to the bottom rung, could it not? Scientists would genetically reduce us quicker than we think...but I'll not think about that just now :o)

As a self-professed "nature girl", I enjoyed this poem and the unique perspective from which you wrote it. I particularly like the wit gleaming from your last stanza.
That covers it... with great wit for a very troubling conclusion.
