Your old girl, like all dogs who are domesticated, lose their desire to hunt and just have their memories of past hunts as they view the scene you describe. I've even seen them chasing in their dreams. So much like us when we age.
Even though I can no longer greet them, we have one squirrel that is friendly and wants to come get some nuts, even from me who cannot feed him like she does. But to see him look at me for assurance, is delightful.
