I have read that the people of Rochester, Minnesota saved Canadian geese when they were almost hunted to extinction in the early part of the twentieth century.
I had an appointment in January, 1971, at the Mayo Clinic, to have a full workup on my spine to see why my condition was deteriorating. I got up early and drove in the calm, clear of a 20° below zero morning. As I approached Rochester on the interstate, I saw a flock of geese flying over the frozen landscape. It was quite a surprise, because I thought all geese flew south for the winter, especially under those bitter cold conditions.
Later, I read that the residents of Rochester provided food year-round for their resident flock of geese. That flock may be the descendents of the ones who were part of the reintroduction of Canadian geese to the wild.
My brother lives on the St. Joseph River in Elkhart, Indiana. The area is overrun with Canadian geese, nesting during the summer. They are magnificent birds and I'm glad we have them to admire.
