The Raven’s Successor

On a morning oh so early
Long before the hurley burley
Of yet another day’s refrain
Suddenly there came a tapping
As of someone gently rapping
Rapping at my window pane.
Only this and nothing more.

Waking from a deathlike slumber
Counting aching joints by number
In vain the tapping I tried to ignore.
Ever onward came the tapping
Now more insistent in its rapping
On my window, but nothing more.
Only this and nothing more.

Past the point of patience now
I turned my head with furrowed brow
To see the cause of my despair.
There it sat upon the sill
Tapping and rapping with a will
A feline menace with jet black hair.
Only my cat and nothing more.
