Going South

I was surprised to see I wrote this way back in 1996. And I'm still here. But like Dylan sang, "It ain't dark yet, but it's gettin' there."

 

The tooth must come out.
There’s no hope for it
            at my age.
My dentist rumbles on:
            Periodontics,
                        Endodontics,
Alphabets of pain,
            Ledgers of loss.
 
And in the background,
The low hum,
            counterpoint and rhythm.
Around the corner ---
Death waits.
 
At my age,
There’s no hope for it.
Only resignation.
