'Always cared deeply for his bride'

Poem Artwork

Under the ice, looking-up

Skin bluing, out of breath

His twin brother skates off

Hand-in-hand with the wife.

Earlier that day, went out

The twin brother murderer

Pushed the other on thin ice

Fell through into an icy grave.

That night, he climbs out

Goes to his home – revenge

Sees the twin brother kissing

Walks in cold, and dripping wet.

Turn around to confront him

Both holding .45 calibers – Bam!

Carry the icy twin back to the lake

Slip him in through the cracks.

He did his twin in out of jealousy

Always cared deeply for his bride

She didn’t love him, but rather hated

So why’d she fill him full of lead?

Back under the ice, he feels a tugging

Looks over, it’s his betrothed – shocked

Also had a jealous twin, slit her throat

Was her twin with his twin; planned for years.

Spring thaw, to the surface bodies float-up

Evidence mounts; other twins get arrested

Twelve jurors convene, return to their seats

Verdict – hung; 1 against; unbeknownst was a twin!

Lance,
You tell strange and macabre stories with strong detail and yet with the right lightness of touch and wit and several doses of irony.
