There is a significant gastronomical chasm between a Coney Island Hot Dog and your typical, or even atypical Chili Dog. A rare gem amongst clumps of coal.

Poem Artwork

The weeks of eating twigs and leaves

Had finally run its course

So after all the blood tests

I planned to eat just like a horse

Now I’m not talking oats and hay

I’m saying oink oink like a hog

There was just one thing to hit the spot

A giant Coney Dog

With greasy spiced beef & mustard

Onions piled up to the sky

Speak of moderation

And I’ll sock you in the eye

But here in LA County

Sadly chili dogs abound

Genuine Coney Island Dogs

Are scarcely ever found

More elusive than the Sasquatch

I could not believe my eyes

When I found one on the internet

After half a dozen tries

Out in Flintridge La Canada~

North of the City of LA

A speedy half an hour’s drive

Just a bit out of my way

So I jumped into my trusty steed

And put the pedal to the floor

As my gut began to grumble

Anticipating gluttony galore

Very soon I was at heaven’s door

I could hardly stay composed

I just stared at the window’s sign

It read “sorry business closed”

I guess things happen for a reason

As I scanned the sign with dread

I could have saved some disappointment

If I’d only called ahead

besides rhyme and rhythm being right on the mark, the humor in this piece carried all the way through. the good thing about food chains is if you have a taste for what they have, they are everywhere. But there is nothing like the specialty foods that make us think of home! Great piece. Kathy

Before I left California, there was a small chain of hot dog stands known as "Der Weinerschnitzerl" (sp) ... 'course that was the late 60's but dude they were great. Good luck

Cheers,
Dan

Eat in New York one of those hot-dogs with all the trims (onions, mustard, and many other unmentionables)on a hot bun, and man! that was one mean lunch washed down with...a Coors of course! (but why you need to drink it wrapped with a brown paper bag? New Yorkers are weird!(LOL)

Chicago Kosher style hot dogs are steamed, New York Kosher style hot dogs are grilled... My first "fast food" way back in 1942 were Chicago Kosher style hot dogs that, to this day, I still love, and there are a few places in the valley that do make a really good, Chicago style Vienna hot dog. You name it, Patrick, I'll meet you there and even pop for lunch.

Every once in awhile I get a craving for Cajun dogs. Bad for me, like the Italian ham my grandmother used to make by hand and I can find at the local deli. What can you do? Yes, a little message from up yonder there, Patrick. This is too funny! And great rhythm. Thanks for the chuckles...Lin

Love those dogs also and a nice salami sandwich on the side. A rare treat now and then, and maybe some pork spare ribs for supper, thrown in.

lol Well done, Patrick. Coney dog stands and restaurants abound here in New England, however. Wish you were here?

Patrick, The gods are trying to look after you, but, you have to give them a chance, ha, watch out for that happy reaper, he knows after to the poor little porky, comes the dorky, ha, but I did the same as you today, I cheated, I had a char of Bismark Herring, it's an aquired taste from very early motherhood times, but still in my psyche, usually, I have something to still my appetite before I get to the very hungry stage and get tempted, I do the same for sex, if you know what I mean. Ouch, darn it, where did you come from, anyway, got to go. Jasmin Horst
