A Watched Deck Never Dries

Part of my Ozark vacation ritual (we brought my 80 year old mom along this year) includes the annual weather sealing of my wooden deck. This year I was a bit early and, since last time I used a superior product containing a bit of oil, it didn’t penetrate as fast. I nearly ended up flat on my ass yesterday as I stepped out the door onto a thin oil slick.

Poem Artwork

Through the power of observation

It comes as no surprise

Matters not how long you stare

A watched deck never dries

It’s been two days and counting

The weather’s been ideal

It should fully dry by now

As I pen this sad appeal

My vacation time is ticking

I cannot use my deck

I’m cooped up here with mother

While I become a nervous wreck

My plan to sketch and paint the lake

With watercolors bright

Will have to wait another day

Perhaps another night

Otherwise I just might find

I’m not as agile as I think

Ending flat upon my ass

On my wooden skating rink

Although I’m optimistic

I’m forced to realize

It matters not how long you stare

A watched deck never dries

Yeah, but at least the deck won't rot. Sometimes ya' gotta decide if the glass is half full or half empty.

Like the poem. Learn a lesson - Next time, save the application of that sealer until the last day, or there abouts. Lesson II – If you’d have been spending your time painting, we’d likely have missed out on this poem, I think that might be a “silver lining”: By the way, could you show us some of your paintings? Maybe you already have and I just wasn't paying attention?

Dick

PS: 3rd line from bottom... should that be forced?

Great verses. Perhaps the wood is like some of my writing and is bit dry. Needs to be primed to get absorption going, like our minds here. Next time try a tree stand. :)

Hah! Funny in a sad sort of way. If you can't use the deck, take your watercolor paraphernalia and find a nice shady place, plop down on the grass and do yo thang.
