Complete enjoyment is what is meant
By the notion of Goal Attainment.
What was formerly called Goal Attainment
Did not mean the getting of coronets;--
It simply meant that nothing more was needed
For one's enjoyment, and that was all.
Nowadays, what is called Goal Attainment
Means the getting of rewards and coronets.
But rewards and coronets belong to one's ego,
They do not affect the nature as it is constituted
By Nature. For this reason the human nature
Has its own special characteristics.
When such things happen to come,
It is but for a time; being just for a time,
Their coming cannot be obstructed
And their going cannot be stopped;
Hence, we should not because of fame
And rewards indulge our goals,
Nor because of distress resort to
The vulgar learning and thinking.
The one of these conditions and the other
May equally conduce to our enjoyment,
Which is actually to be free from anxiety.
If now the departure of what is transient
Takes away our delight, this view shows
That what enjoyment has brought us
Was actually worthless and mean stuff.
Hence they who lose themselves
In their zealous pursuit of things
And lose their inherent character
In their study of what is vulgar,
Must be pronounced guys
Who turn things upside down.
Therefore the Classic states, 'In producing
And then developing all things and affairs
Create but do not possess them as your own;
Act but do not expect any reward for outcome;
Lead but do not dominate in your attempt
To win the world. . .' These three rules
Are called the Clues of Goal Attainment
Which make you steadfast and unbeatable.
well done
I believe this phenomenon is a result of, for a certain segment of society, the wealth and ability to be able to set almost any reasonable goal and achieve it--in fact--many. On the contrary, a century ago, most would only achieve one or two things in a lifetime. Only the very, very rich could reach for more.
When I used PERT (program evaluation and review technique) effectively during my schooling and career, I accomplished major goals by taking the shortest path, of many, small goals, in sequence in the most efficient way. Thereby reducing the stress of doing something that seemed impossible by doing small things that were easily achievable in a short period of time, eventually reaching the unreachable.
PERT was used by thousands of companies to come together to put a man on the moon in 10 years--a lofty goal.
