In Retired Mountains

I’ve met many good people --

Far and wide, they walk

In the dust along the pathway

Of their trades and fates.

 

If they are unaware

Of the worldly affairs,

How can they ford

The torrential flow of being?

 

Prosperity and glory

Can be kept a while only;

The family dependants --

Just for some time are in the flock.

 

Even if I had a million in cash,

It is not as good as being penniless

Here, in the retired mountains,

Where with others I rejoice

In the fellowship of Nature

And preserve it in myself.

So many are just getting by in retirement through "being." I think it is good to be poor later in life. For no needs anything but the essentials when one is in the, "Fellowship of nature."

If one finds oneself "in the retired mountains" and being "penniless" to boot, then indeed it may mean that one is not penniless at all but rich to the point where you can say, as in this insightful poem, "I rejoice in the fellowship of nature". John
