The feet of man on the earth

Tread but on a small surface,

But going on to where

He has headed for or where

He has not trod before,

He can traverse a great distance.

Man's knowledge is rather scanty,

But going on to what he does not know,

He comes to know what is meant

By lofty Heaven and humble Earth.

He comes to know Earth

As the great boundlessness--

All is to him its embodiment;

He starts to know its nature

As the only truth of existence

And he examines it diligently.

Then he starts to know Heaven's will

As the great determiner of his fate,

And he holds it fast

At his decision-making activity.

Eventually, he knows Heaven-and-Earth

As the great unity, and he comprehends it;

He knows the world as the great mystery,

And he unfolds it. He knows the sky

As the great illuminator, and he observes it;

He knows the earthly principles

As the great framer -- the cause of all things.

This makes completeness of his knowledge;

His operations roll round and without

Cutting off the corners; and his life becomes

Filled up with the meaningful content.
