When all the four seasons
Have their definite times
To alternate between cold
And heat, not a single thing
Receives damage or injury
And none of living beings
Come to a premature end.
At this, they greatly share
The placid tranquillity
Belonged to the unity
Of Heaven and Earth.
I am from the coldest part of the United States. I can assure you that during midwinter when it is below zero, animals and birds, in particular, are hurting. Great numbers are killed by predators who are also starving until spring. Most of the pain and carnage is unseen by human philosophers ensconced in their hideaways drinking tea by warm fire.
And when the heat and drought come in mid summer, plants and animals die universally. The death is necessary to prevent overpopulation of all species. But it is a violent world that is only seen if one counts the death toll amid the tranquility.
