The vermilion richness
Of the coming autumn
Speaks not of the pale
Innocence and chastity
Of the vernal twilight,
Nor of the green vigor
Of the summer nights,
But of the mellowness
And practical wisdom
Of the coming cropping.
Ripening and withering--
It knows the limitations
Of lifetime and therefore
Is variegated on the eve
Of the white ceremonial--
The wintertime requiem.
With so many ways to perceive the gift of seasons, you have reminded us that there is perfection in way Nature presents new auras for us to use our 5 senses to acquire peace and calm within. Well penned.
I like to be close to the earth where I can sense the changes all around me signaling out nature knows when winter is coming and is preparing for it.
My doctoral advisor started his education as a botanist, told me that leaves turn because the nutrients that flow from the ground all the way to these top leaves dries up by the end of summer and photosynthesis shuts down for the coming winter. Chlorophyll in the leaves, making them green, is a key ingredient in photosynthesis. When the chlorophyll leaves the leaves, what is left is the trace minerals that all have their distinct colors, especially when oxidized. The result is vivid color before the stem grows weak and the autumn winds blow the leaves from the trees.
Your image as a surreal quality that leads me to believe that it was photoshopped. Just looking at it reminds me of the fires raging in Redding the last couple days from the air.
Who cannot have an infatuation with the beloved season of autumn, that heralds in, as you say, "the wintertime requiem", but that goes out in a blaze of infinite glory. Lovely poem.
