Free from all cares and affairs
I stay at ease in the cloudy fog;
From the very outset I didn’t try
To be on top of the whole world.
To pass thru all the perils beneath
You must lean on your trusted stick;
For dangers above grip tight the lianas
To climb up right to the bottomless skies.
I, like most, fell short of my lofty ambitions. And, I think I know what held me back. There was a point when I gave up trying to get to those lofty peaks because I knew the price might be too great for their reward. Like those who climb Mount Everest into the "death zone" above 27,000 feet and die because they overestimated their physical ability, I feared the same, watching many above me lose their jobs and, sometimes, their sanity as they struggled with tasks they had no stick to stand on.
Great metaphor in your description of what a person who knows his/her limitations does with their life.
We spend our life climbing and clawing, trying to get to the top. Some of us reach it, and some of us don't. The thing to remember is, what goes up, must come down. And as we get older, it becomes a downhill slide to the end.
Love ya!
