Beautiful Places
By John Herlihy

Why do beautiful places give us sad thoughts,
Full of the lingering nostalgia of parting shots?
We breathe in the sunrise until it fills our bones;
Its sunlight shines on knitted blankets in our homes.
And yet when the sun comes up, we simply stare;
Feelings fall into the heart’s cave we can hardly bear.

Why do those beautiful places begged us to share,
Visions of the sacred we see in nature laid bare.
When we hear the heart beat of a forest primeval,
We remember raw Nature after creation’s upheaval.
The forest itself beats within us like another heart;
Intimate settings that find themselves worlds apart.

Why do beautiful places evoke glory of the Divine,
Full of purity and light bordering on the Sublime.
While our hearts often cloud over with dark shadow,
We bow our heads in reflection to see a fleeting doe.
Butterflies flit thru the air and simply steal our hearts,
When a rainbow appears, our trouble quickly departs.

Whether we feel wretched and forlorn, happy or sad,
Beautiful places are always in the eye of certainty clad.
Their vistas arouse emotions that lie deeply within;
Their blessing encompasses our every virtue and sin.
They take us to places we would never go on our own;
They draw forth joy and sorrow we ourselves have sown.

ALL I KNOW IS, ALL THINGS WERE CREATED BY GOD FOR US, THEREFORE WHEN WE ARE IN THE MIDST OF ALL HE HAS CREATED(VIA OUR MINDS OR BODILY)WE WILL 'FEEL' A CRESCENDO OF EMOTIONS.WE ARE LIFTED AND CARRIED TO BEAUTIFUL PLACES...FULL OF OUR CREATOR AND US. WE CANNOT BUY THIS KIND OF 'PERFECT PEACE'...ANYWHERE!!! THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Fantastic poem, John!! Beautiful places, whether I've been there and have taken photos or, as Ron stated, watching the National Geographic channel evoke a longing. Oh, and yes, rainbows do chase the blues away!!

Love ya!

yes, as you sow you shall mow; the beautiful places are like the fine arts which need the viewers to be realized. It is Theodore M. Dostoevsky who says that beauty will eventually save the world. Another beautiful poem. Cheers, alex

While I've experienced much that this continent has to offer by way of its beauty, I am very grateful for National Geographic to take me to places so remote that very few have ever been. The only sad thoughts I've had at beautiful places is not having someone by my side to share it with.

While we can develop a desert into a beautiful city, we need to hold back on developing a beautiful place into a tourist attraction.

Beautiful places have never given me sad thoughts, but Beautiful Places was a beautiful poem.

Oh, I would imagine it relies completely on the inner workings of the one who beholds such beauty. For a tormented mind, a beautiful place isn't registered as such. It is something he must avoid or disown. It's the mind above all, and in almost every case, that shuts down beauty whether nature or physical.

Isn't this dichotomy a strange thing? I find it interesting how two people can look at one thing yet see it entirely differently. For instance, the ways a member of the Nature Conservancy and a real estate developer may see a specific plot of land. I think it brings out the differences in attitude in a big way, both emotional based on their priorities.

An interesting read. Thank you!

Rebecca
