Ghost tracks…

There in the Pine Barrens are their tracks,

They pass under and around hillside cracks,

They are not necessarily made by something like a foot,

More a sweeping motion over the sand; sometimes left like a soot…

All sorts of tracks can be found there,

Raccoons, turkey, deer and even some bear,

Even old railroad tracks are left from a long time past,

The closer to the ocean one gets, the better chance they will see a buried mast…

Tracks of ghosts do exist from long dead Piney’s*,

Lived there they did into the mid twentieth century,

Prior to that, they were mostly inbred,

Towns of people that now no longer do exist,

Not even do any structures or foundations last,

Many occupants did try to stay, a long time they did persist,

But times have changed; no more can be found in the Barrens a ghostly mix…

Sounds of the past are still heard,

Corn liquor still made in hollows where silence is preferred,

What you do see of the Piney’s that still live there,

Are now just everyday people, owners of land in the Barrens,

Their homes and property no longer in disrepair,

But still as a newcomer you will be greeted with a suspicious glare…

The tracks of ghosts forgotten from the past,

Still in the Pine Barrens do and will forever last…

Piney’s: a name given to those that lived in the Pine Barrens of NJ…not derogatory, just fun for most…*PINEY POWER*

I have heard it used this way as well and this was one of your finest Ed. I find this same thing when traveling.

A fascinating write, my friend. And I would love to roam those barren pines with you - looking for tracks and traces of these ghosts from the past.

Think I've read about such a place. They even had multi story buildings.

But this was down south, I think?

Delightful poem Ed..
