My neighborhood, the United Nations...

Poem Artwork

On one side a Chinese lady that speaks no English,
On the other side a group of Mexicans with noisy brats,
A lot of other folks Black, Indian, Puerto Rican, White, green & pink,
None seem to be so bad, to be very honest; I seem to be the only one that stinks…

I’d be happy to learn another language,
Spanish seems the easiest, Chinese the hardest,
For the most part as well it is pretty quiet,
Until the grade school behind me re-opens,
Then I am sure the noise will rise to the level of a riot…

I do have an ex-Marine upstairs,
At time he likes to around his apartment roam,
I always ask him if he got a pet elephant,
But he is a good kid, helped me quite a bit,
Still, I am relatively comfortable here, since for now this is my home…

It looks like you're going to make some fine new friends. Unless we are Native American, we are all immigrants at one time or another. It's much easier to fit in today than it ever was. We moved to the country from our little town in high school. It took a few years for my parents to be accepted there, not being farmers, just owning a farmhouse.

I've lived in my neighborhood since it was newly built and people fought to buy the houses, three years later in an oil economic downturn, all the houses were empty except two across the street owned by a single black veteran and a black family, and the home next door, owned by an Indian who had rented it out to World War II veteran from Kentucky, his wife and son. A few years later, the street was filled with nearly 100 children every day after school. They stopped trick-or-treating at my house about 1987 when a party was provided by the neighborhood instead. Now the neighborhood is totally United Nations. Everyone keeps very much to themselves so I know very few neighbors. There are few children on the street. Life goes on…

Yikes! A challenge to ones sanity I'm certain. I lived in Rogers Arkansas back in the late seventies. Worked for 'Tyson Foods' as a journeyman carpenter. We built Hog farms. You pic looks very similar to a lot of the apartments there around Rogers. "Then I am sure the noise will rise to the level of a riot" Yikes again! I can only commiserate with you about the noise. The older Michele and I get the more we enjoy natures 'perfectly balanced' quietude. Enjoy your new home, bubba. Peace...
