For the masses, particularly those who had difficulty with reading and writing, unfortunately, often taught by bad teachers and with parents to never read, wrote much but worked with their hands and not their minds, comic books became a way to read. The pictures really helped the words.

In order to make comic books interesting, characters had to be created by those that drew them. Caricature superheroes were often easier to draw than caricatures of humans. And of course moral lessons could be taught by giving these heroes ability to overcome seemingly unsurmountable odds.

I found that even in college, when an assignment was given for students to read a classic book, they often turned to a series called, Classic Comics, to get the gist of the story so they could write to the assignment rather than read the book. Laziness and cheating always wins out over hard work and honesty when it comes to getting ahead.

These heroes like the increasingly more violent video games are becoming the mainstream pastimes and stress relievers for most. Marvel's Avengers have become big box office. Like dumb and dumber, we are more and more attracted to dumbed down or shocking fare to please or ease our troubled minds. I'm even hooked on the Walking Dead. More power to us!
