We are all in bubbles, some aware of it and most not. A species in denial.

Poem Artwork

I defy your exemption from this broken world.

So broken that there are a series of bubbles

for the oblivious, denying anything is wrong.

Slaves

I saw it break through each extinction event,

and yours is next, oh ye non-heeders of the

Ordovician-Silurian,

Devonian,

Permian-Triassic,

Triassic-Jurassic,

and, most recently, the

Cretaceous and then…

Are we not destroyers of species?

Us a mere species of slaves.

Your bubbles will pop into froth,

your self-deception will feign shock,

but I won’t.

Ignorance and idiocy prevail

In your quiet mansions

and the rest of your

decadent facades.

Slaves.

You think money will buffer you

during any crisis.

But when they come

knocking on your door for food, for supplies,

what will you say to them

before they ransack your temple,

a false success by worshipping wealth?

Slaves.

And we all fall short

because we are “comfortable,”

our own little bubbles chasing us around,

waiting for us to stop and

have that scotch, three fingers,

to ease the mind that all day

we were nerve-wracked to have

the cushions of doubt

upon our couches, our beds,

lulling us to sleep

after brain numbing “stories”

on the TV.

Slaves.

Even the poor seek means of comfort.

Slaves.

But slaves to what?

We’ve been warned.

To me, this is a harsh, stark, and real observation of our world. This is a very meaningful, apt, and timely poem, Danae. Thank you for sharing it. Love and best wishes to you,

Regis

Yes, in geologic time, we are certainly doomed. A very dystopic theme. But, we are also an intelligent species that is extremely adaptable. We have suffered unimaginable hardship in the past and come out stronger. Sure, those who hide behind façades and live in bubbles are easily pierced and brought to their knees, but there are those, those we deem primitive, who still know how to survive in the direst of circumstances.

I have written myself about the perils we have created for ourselves, and your write is among some of the best giving us warning. But knowing how history has gone, the future looks far brighter than the past, even though the wildest dreams have not come true as quickly as optimistic utopians would wish.

These are very thoughtful observations about an issue that many people probably do not spend one moment in contemplation over. I would like to have read your thoughts about how to break out from our bubbles, who is most likely to do it, and why. But maybe that is the subject of a future poem. Well written, as usual, Danae. --Ed

So insightful for your age, Danae, and this was so uniquely you. I have begun to escape to tv myself and much of it is because I am becoming increasingly antisocial. I don't understand how humans become so self centered and uncaring about the state of our world. Just another darn great write.

There is a syndrome of "head in the sand" that get's a cliche hit now and again, but your poetic warning, loaded with deftly placed verbal images, asks we lift our heads up out of the granular suffocation that metaphorically comes at us with all the little fragmentary pummeling of everyday flirtations wanting to entrap us into the quagmire of collectiveness called NORMAL. Please, you our there who buy into this rape and pillage of your inner-being, stand up, like the poem posits, stand up and tell those who would have you entrap yourself in their bubble: Go f*#k yourself. Yeah, I apologize not. "Go f*#k yourself."

Don't watch TV. Hate it. I got lost within most of your poem . . .
