Sepsis flies in air,
falls in mouth,
rises in lungs.
Addles the brain, the heart,
Tainted oxygen, nitrogen
By CO2 uncapped.
Guide rails break,
train tracks jumped.
On the road to destruction;
on the trail of tears.
A condensation of deception,
a normalization of chaos,
a fear unspoken,
a hate pervasive.
What hope is left?
Death of leaders?
Jaded pessimist says,
new powermongers
will arrive, replace.
Did we kill ourselves?
Like check mate,
never removing the king piece.
Yet time ticks down,
ever leading us
to a futuristic
garbage trashed planet
all due to greed.
What poisons are accepted?
What life loss is okay?
How little will the few give the many,
their slaves of crushed will?
The drones of mindless TV
beckon the sheep,
right or left,
center or outliers.
Is news a package of hot dogs?
A bite-sized cancer stick?
Do we love the taste so much,
we ignore how it’s made,
acquiesce to who’s making it?
I gaze, screen glazed
and wonder if I’m the same,
examine myself for lazy passivity,
find myself guilty,
find myself resigned.
Just one more hit,
just one more IV drip,
just one more swallow.
A potent piece - gripping and truth-telling of the world we live in. Your style is compelling and riveting. Certainly it is a wake-up call for those who need to we wakened.
Another right on, in depth write. I feel the poor will succumb, and the wealthy have themselves protected. If they can get rid of us, many of the catastrophes will self-correct, just d/t fewer consumers. If you don't know who Robert Mercer is, look him up. Horrid man. I ramble; great write, as usual.

Every time we seem to take a step forward, it seems we take 2 back, and the way our current president is rolling back regulations it will only get worse. When will we stop being greedy corporations useful idiots.

I thought we lost you… But you're back with a vengeance with this piece of art/truth that we seem to want to, but can't ignore. The ocean is the canary in the cage. It's increasing temperature and acid content is of much concern for many reasons. Coral bleaching is only one of the symptoms leading to a catastrophic release of methane. While we all vegetate in front of our television sets buying the latest commercial fad designed to numb our minds and take our money all in the name of profit and greed.
Tis a toxic world we are living in. With so many slow and deliberate ways to slowly self-destruct, as your poem's subtext points out, the world needs to look hard at the choices they have and in most cases, make changes that mitigate the scourge that far too many remain continuing their distorted focus. As to tthe depth of your poem's exploration, I would agree with Mr. Phillips. Your writing is always distinguished and dazzling in its spot-on perception and subjective feelings without any "woe is me." Looking forward to your next piece of wordsmithing...soon.
