Do we have to acquiesce to the way things are, or can we see with hope, however infrequent it may be?

Poem Artwork

Steam from my coffee cup

becomes one with that above subway gratings.

Pounding the concrete and metal links,

herd-walkers brush by,

perhaps the solo touch they will have that day,

seeing only clothes and shoes,

except the accosters,

hitting them up for something

that makes eye contact unavoidable.

Eyes tearing up,

smelling the exhaust,

breathing the taste of pollution,

urban scratchy cough ubiquitous,

sight obscured in fog-like smog.

But how that light through gray

beams down when it feels like it.

“Have you seen it?” A voice asks.

Their heads turn up

like crated pigs seeing the sky for the first time.

Hope was always there.

Warm-blooded life was all around,

there for the engagement.

As you so often demonstrate, human emotions and intellect are in the final analysis, controlled by the individual. Knowing NY well, as we do, it has always provided positive stimulation in the light of what many people only see as darkness. The five senses are always ready to take in all there is in the city and then choose how that stimuli can be seen for positive growth. Lucky are those who don't buy into the obvious, who see as you've suggested here, "warm blooded life was all around there for the engagement", even for pigs. Subtlety at its best in this compact piece of prosetry. Bravo!

How can anyone put it more eloquently than Ed. I rarely read AD any more, but if I go blind, I will find someone to read your incredible writing. If Ed ever gets you that rival, I want to know who it is. I will say it again and again. You are freaking superb.

I agree with Michael. The city can be a grind. But there is always hope, coming from a song like some of Simon and Garfunkel's… Bridge over Troubled Water, I Am a Rock and The Boxer, show us that the city can be a source of great creativity and hope for all of mankind.

But I still prefer the country to the city.

To many people go numb living in the city, and thus become a part of it. Grime, grit, and all. I loved the poem.

I'm always pleased to find such unique insight to the human condition that you reveal with each of your renderings. Oh hell, that's an understatement. I'm awestruck by it. You see where others cannot; you feel where others will not; and you express yourself so well that it moves me to find new ways just to tell you how much I love your style, your class, your engagement. You have one rival, and I will tell you about her at another time. Meanwhile, thanks in bunches.
