Your cancer was your final challenge,
You could not depart with your children near.
At four a.m. my phone it rang,
I rushed to your side, engulfed in fear.
Seven long minutes, still etched in my mind,
When I arrived, I turned to stone,
Emotions swarmed, I knew you were gone,
I knew you had waited until you were alone.
Your sickened remnants merely remained,
We had ten minutes, you and me,
I did not know just what to say,
I felt as empty as one can be.
I held your hand and stroked your face,
That room was ours, just you and me,
And as I looked up, my grief set aside,
I saw your spirit and knew you were free.
I gazed upward and watched you leave,
White streams of silk swirled above,
It danced and sang, the mother I knew,
It filled my heart with your pure love.
I saw the beauty of your soul released,
Playfully circling, a joyful motion,
Surrounding my heart and caressing me still,
You left me with your final notion.
“I have fulfilled all of my dreams,
I’ve loved and lived a wonderful spell.
I’ve met my sorrows and sent them away,
Please let me go, for now I am well.”
