Tsunami... We’re shaken awake … when earth tremors and aches
Killer walls of water third worlds away
weigh heavy on our witness
we who are safe
yet feel the wake of seismic waves
slap us in the face with our humanity
as the world wobbles and we’re shaken
to our core, reminded of our place
a flimsy part of nature – flawed -
with feeble powers outside our fate
subject to fickleness - miracle and grace
knowing every one of us is living latent
on the fault lines of disasters
overhead and under-feet
all in this roiling realm together, one
as all the global reach
so Sumatra quakes and the world shrinks
millions are moved, milliseconds increase
and common consciousness tries to rise to meet
the cosmic drive in miles and miles and miles
of oceanic empathy and aid,
lending dignity to the dire need.
Shaken to the core and reminded of our place; how true, and how sad it takes tragedies such as these to make us remember our place, and our humanity, and our compassion.
a thoughtful, provoking piece you've penned--thank you

They do not understand that it can happen here next. Booms in Richmond, water receeds in wells throughout Virginia for five hours the day that the tsunami hit. This so far away and yet so near. Your poem makes one think.
Beautifully said Helga! Your compassion comes through
and the feeling of awe that we all experience at times
of such unfathomable disaster. We can only hope to see
some good may come from it in the future
