America equals the combined greatness of all its Citizens; we are in this Together.

      America, The Great

Grandmother took a job to make ends meet
Times were severe, supplies were dear
And there was rarely enough to eat.

She replaced a man who was called to War
To go defend, along with friends
Belgium’s cold and embattled shore.

She proudly stood for hours on end
Wielding the torch, she kept on the porch
As she served with the other women.

On the hardest day she grabbed her head:
Two officers emerged, and everyone heard
That Matilda’s sons were... dead.

Taking courage from the flags though quite unnerved
Simple pine boxes to rest, she had done her best
To mark their lives and the Country they had served.

She hung both flags daily saluting their fate
For she knew that her sons, just babies with guns
Were two of the “men” to make America, The Great.

I descend from a long line of Patriots. Members of our family have fought in every war.  I have in my possession the Symbol of Leslie Faith & Fortitude: a small blue New Testament that was signed by - and attended the service of -  each soldier who went to battle.  Recognizing that America is at a precipice, like Jeremiah the prophet, I have wept many rivers of tears for my Nation.. for its survival.. and for the future of my grandchildren, and by GOD’s blessing, in July, a great-grandchild!

GOD SAVE AMERICA!

* Actually, our great-grandson Giovanni DeAngelo Delvalle (John, the Angel of the Valley) arrived nearly 6 weeks early - on June 10th - which is also His Uncle Nick's Birthday!  By GOD's grace Gio is flourishing and growing rapidly - he even has a head of wavy black hair like Samson!

I missed this great poem of yours somehow...sorry I'm so late. It is so very touching in your simple telling of your Grandmother's story. "babies with guns" I had the same outlook when I wrote "Little Soldier Boy" Oh, the grief that we endure! How we need our Savior and Friend every day!

God bless you every day, dear Sister!

This is such wonderful patriotic poetry Rhonda! Yes the young do the fighting and if they are blessed they live to tell the tale. I have interviewed many WWII vets for my book. Some are no longer with us but their stories come alive in the History book I wrote. I included my mom in my book she worked on radar 3 and 1/2 years during the war. The factory was on 24 hr. rotating shifts 7 days a week. She had no days off and worked straight through including Christmas and New Years. She worked the day shift for all that time without taking even one sick day off. She said she would do it again! That's my mom, MY hero! Amen!

Yes, we all are indebted to those who courageously went to war and especially, the many that died.

We are nowhere near the precipice of anything except maybe the greatest war ever. Saving our environment and thereby, saving us. Killing others never solved our problems.

My younger twin brothers were born four weeks early. One of them was married happily for the third time last weekend. The other was married happily for the third time last year. Both of them have a college-educated son and daughter. One son is now proudly serving in the Army reserve. Giovanni will have a long and healthy and happy life.

Myself and my two brothers fought in ww2 and we all by the grace of God survived.Yes I lost a number of friends in that war so this poem has very deep meanings to me.

Sad poetry, but with a VERY patriotic message. Yes, many have paid the price to make this country great, and now we are watching it implode from within.

Love your smiling face photo!
