A calamity I had not seen before; a scene I will long remember

Poem Artwork

(His mother was in another room when this happened, but entered shortly after)

"I'm HUNGRY!"  he roared, and he kicked the wall hard --
His face was transformed by his rage!

Such fury, contained in a package so small --
a natty-haired boy, only 5 years of age.

How could I have known he'd not eaten that day,
though the afternoon plodded along;
(my lunch had been tasty, enjoyed long before)
I tried to correct him and show him his wrong

My teaching fell flat when his mother appeared;
my words fled in compassionate sighs;
As she laid out the depth of their neediness,
the glare of their poverty opened my eyes.

I'll never forget that little guy's anger,
as his mother explained their sad state.
He couldn't understand why their table was bare;
He only knew that his hunger was great

Please God, reach down and love others through me,
and give me discernment for every day,
so I can do something to make their lives bright
and help them to see You along their way.

"I was hungry, and ye gave me food; I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink; I was a stranger, and ye took me in..........Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."
                  (Matthew 25:35 & 40b)

We tend to forget the hungry, who fall between the cracks of society. It's good to remember our humanity.

Unquestionably sad, Connie...but so skillfully and, yes,
beautifully crafted. Still, we can't shake the sadness
of this awful reality in so many lives. -gene.

How sad, Connie. Brings home how important it is for our children (and all children are "ours") to be nourished...with both food and love! Oh, the things we take for granted...{sigh}.

As I read this I was thinking of that scripture with which you ended. You set it up beautifully.

Connie, there was a time when my children were very small that I would sit and cry and the table praying there would be something left over for me to eat. I went all the way down to 80 pounds, so I know the disdain and anger of looking into a child's eyes when they are hungry....

Be always safe,
Karen

Beautifully written Connie. It makes one stop and think about the things they need to do for their fellow man. May God Bless You.

I just want to add that even now, as I read this, it brings tears to my eyes and sadness to my heart, knowing there are children who are hungry, neglected and abused, many brought up by angry, uncaring parents. This boy really brought it home to me.
