"Make Love, not War"

Poem Artwork

Sparked by St. Anthony’s Fire,
high on "love and peace"
In a Haight society,
Flower Power Child in bare feet . . .

Picture the uncensored conscious
in a paisley shirt,
growing long sideburns, ditching’ 45's
with those stupid, record center inserts

Ovaltine
and Bosco, replacing crew cuts and do’s
With "long hairs" on choppers, turned on by Captain Kangaroo
"Breaking on through to the other’s..." framed,
The Who, Janis, Jimi, and Jefferson Airplane

In total harmony,
to the best of
The Rolling Stones
The Magic Carpet Ride of music,
 Steppenwolffed a "Motherload!"

"Keep on Truckin
’,"
men in ruffled shirts,
dance to The Dead or Diggers
with one of Betsy Wetsy's Playmates in a little mini skirt

Dippity-do, going door to door, Lassie, drinking Kool-aid,
chant, "make love not war"
Paddle swats in schools, the real penny loafers . . .
Free food and pay toilets; psychedelic concepts painted on hippie buses

Tube tops, troll dolls, and Jackie O’ glasses,
Tie dies and headbands, mouthed with the waxed lips of "No Hassles"
To the A&P by day, in pink polka dots
to a Cuckoos Nest at night, trippin’ on "acid rock"

Fantasy’s at Avalon and Fillmore East,
surrealistic journeys, giving the "sign of peace"
Protests in picket lines, link the gum wrapper chains
Woodstock
’s in a downpour of yet, another reign

Spoolies in the hair, smoking candied cigarettes’
Letting it all hang out, braless,
groovin’
against the picking up of stiffs

Like clothes on the line,
pinned with conformist tiddley winks,
the Beatnik boy’s were unfurled with the contemporaries of Brando’s finks

Counter cultural rebels, footing platform shoes
Leathered, fringed and bangle’d, singing to the
Moody Blues
Smiley faces
of joy on a Duncan yo-yo
Cannabis "stoneheads" twisted in a Chinese jump rope

Panhandle, Lincoln and Golden Gate Park
"Born to be Wild
," Sunset Stripping in the dark
Kennedy
and King, and "Imagine," by Lennon;
...and "Who surrendered to whom?"
"Peace, not war", to No Knock Laws; Now. . . "How does rioting ensue?"

The album covers are still laying under the chenille bed spreads
with the drive-in movies, station wagons, and "Everything I Own" by Bread
108 crayons boxed, with hot pinks and limes,
"Are Mexican jumping beans and Mood Rings still selling at the
Five n’ Dime?"

A Brook Farm ideology; Another utopian time
Cruisin’ on inner tubes of Schwinn, I’m darning my toe socks in rhyme
Pop bottle refunds supplanted Kick the Can
and yeah . . . we’re still flowering guns of soldiers . . .
"Iraq’d, by Vietnam!"

So much here that many of us can relate to, you've brought back so many memories for me. I recall wearing the platform shoes, listening to 45's and eight tracks, ah and the music, nothing quite like Night Moves blasting with the windows down, and headed toward the drive in, you've penned it well a nostalgic write that brought back many memories indeed, remember lighting the bics at concerts, the disco floors...wow! But the last line is a powerful one, profound, lingers on one's thoughts! Well done!
Blessings,
Joyce B.

So much here to share dear Kimmy!
Love those times, FREE Spirit in the mind and heart!
A gem I will treasure and savor AGAIN for later!
Thank you for your undying heart Kimmy!
With so many children and big life, you find time to write about so much.
It's totally amazing!
YOU STRONG WOMEN ;
Evertything I own by BREAD, anything by BREAD, still sweeps me away, I have their VERYBESTOfBread, in my car right now!
The melodies we need em'!
YOU have touched so much, this was absoulutly divine!
GRoovy Women!
Peace out!
Here- I'll share my peace pipe with ya'...

Wow, Kimmy, you've touched on about everything and everyone. Well, you might have missed The Talking Heads. And do you see some kind of contradiction and manevolent trap in giving free food to the poverty-stricken and homeless and then providing only pay toilets? What the hell is wrong with us?

Is God really pleased that we can spend $600,000 on a new ballpark or stadium and won't open the doors on vacant days but, instead, make our wretched unfortunates sleep on a bare sidewalk in the cold of winter? And in some cities even arrest them for sleeping in public.

Yeah, we're letting it all hang out all right. Satan's got a hundred politicians lined up for pork barrel pitchforks while God's still searching for one single politician to model his new halo line.

Yours for bottled sarcasm so we'll at least have something to redeem.
Richard

P.S. In all my bluster, did I fail to mention that Unveiling The Flower Child is a great work of art? Shame on me!

A very good wrtie my friend, I remember each moment well. Thank you for this stroll. Those were days that no one will ever see again. When we had the need to rise up and be noticed. They never knew what hit them. Lady J

You remember well those days Kimmy.

Funny ... you just don't seem that old to me. I loved the beatniks too, and their excursions into the twilight zone with bongos and the beat poetry. Like Maynard G. Krebs (sp.) on Dobie Gillis. Member that show? HA!

Anyway ... this was excellent and warmed my heart. I haven't laughed this much in a bloody week.
Blessings to you ...

Kimmy,

You recreate the sixties and bring it back to the present day: nothing's changed, after all. Well done.

Kimmy,
Excellent play on words that brought back my own memories of earlier, "easier" times and how we did not really care what happened "tomorrow."

Kimmy,

You pulled back the petals on this one and exposed the whole anchalada. I can remember much more but you've covered it quite well. No one was very enthused to be the first one on their block to be sent home in a box but all was a sign of the times. Does time, like history actually repeat itself ? I wonder. Your blessed with a rare talent my friend and a beautiful heart.

Unique, symbolistic-surrealistic-esoteric-impressionistic magnificent
composition... "Unveiling The Flower Child" is a revealing page of true reality of our time. The closing lines >>>

"Pop bottle refunds supplanted Kick the Can
and yeah . . . we’re still flowering guns of soldiers . . .
"Iraq’d, by Vietnam!"

>>> were written with a platinum pen held by an Eagle's quill.

In admiration,
