Thoughts that come to mind when we travel down dirt roads and the trail of dust that is left behind.....

Poem Artwork

                                   Dusty road.........

Traveling slowly along an old dusty road,
can barely see the sun peeking
                         through the leaves.
On either side trees have grown across strong,
reaching out like a cover waving
                               in the breeze.

Off to the right a small patch of land appears,
small homes, buildings, a town once alive.
Ghost town it is not, abandoned town it is,
what was the reason this town did not thrive.

Small mercantile embedded in the middle
                                of town,
hitching posts, water troughs not fit
                         for man or beast.
Broken glass, missing door, sign barely
                                hanging on,
must have outlived many to say the least.

A few steps down at the end of the street,
a silversmith shop with many tools unbroken.
Rusted anvil fallen over, horseshoes hang
                                 on a loop,
water bucket with water left behind
                                as a token.

It would not be complete without a saloon,
which we found with those famous
                              swinging doors.
Dried leather top bar, cracked mirror behind,
broken chairs, round tables and of course
                             wooden floors.

Resting against a wall with a little
                                round seat,
a lack luster piano with half the keys rotten.
The history of this place now lives on
                                   in silence,
               perhaps passed on but hopefully
                                not forgotten.

Time is passing, we had better move along,
one last look before we leave this
                               lovely place.
The sun will rise again to begin a new day,
back in my memory will remain a small trace.

Your descriptions make wonderful visual images. I could just picture that abandoned town--for me such places carry ghosts of the past and you've presented that beautifully in your poem.

I love exploring historic places. Somehow the stories they tell can be quite a journey in themselves. Enjoyed

I've been to deserted town and often wondered what took place when the town was bustling with activity. 10 miles from me is such a town that in 1900 had over 12,000 residents and now has 30. Ah, the good ole days....

In New Mexico we have many such abandoned towns - everyone's moved to the "big" city. Fortunately, some families still return for a visit to give homage to whence they came, and pass on the family history. There is great festivity is sharing the past and looking toward the future.

Some of the greatest treasures often lie at the end of an old dirt road. I love wandering down them, and this is a wonderful piece, Karen.

Route 66 is becoming that old dusty road which should be traveled by vintage Harley or a maltracted old pickup (red) to bring the memories back. (Traveling with trailerhomes and Lexus not allowed!!!)
You sure will left a trace and your face in the memory of a few good people.
