Red Fox In Winter

how silently her dainty paws fall upon driven snow
as stealthily she moves through the wintery wood
she wears no disguise and each observer shall know
only a lithe fox would be brazenly dressed in red fur
while other creatures are camouflaged in drab gray
she flaunts red, a gift to a cold, neutral, winter world
as she ventures out of her den to hunt and to play

she has it and flaunts her fur with finesse
a splash of crimson delight in a barren scene
is she taken for granted , envied or ignored
by woodland creatures less colorful than she?

catch her if you can but it's doubtful you ever will
she knows the forest, each creek, rock and tree
a slight glimpse of her gives the senses a thrill
as swiftly, gracefully she bolts and will disappear
soon to become her unwitting, small prey
a rabbit, a squirrel, perhaps a field mouse
fox kits are well fed at end of a winter day
