i need a good poem to counteract the bad times that's been dancin' in my life: one with lots of rhyme and if not that, definately a tap-shuffle-tap meter to get my toes to tappin' so's i can stomp on that damnfool devil's head and put it where it belongs - right under my feet. and i need a good dose of poetry so i don't have to worry all of the damntime - i'm tired of aging myself so let me find the fountain of youth in exotic places that only exist in your words and re-discover the reason i write in the first damnplace and why i used to love it: i need some good news.

Texas two-step?
Nothing changes unless we do. Attitude is everything.
You may doubt your capabilities as a writer, but I happen to think you are very good at your craft, and you are only getting better and better! You are more than a good writer: you are a TRUE poet, and your works are admired by many (most of all, ME!!). Excellent write; keep that pen going, and may your 2006 be your best year EVER!

Karla...methinks at one time or another we all go through a period of doubt about ourselves, our actions, goals and motivations. Learn from this and carry on. Your writing is strong enough that no fluff is needed. Write for yourself first and always and don't be concerned about others. Take care Lady Buckeye and the best to you and yours this new year.

We all doubt ourselves from time to time, but truly you have no reason to. Hell girl you don't even need the help of a muse, but you have one, within yourself.

I was once listening a short talk between a boy and a girl. They were both my students back in the early eighties when I taught secondary schools in Jowhar town, Somalia. The boy teased her and soon the girl answered so rudely to him:
Boy: Little pretty girl
Girl: Nonsense
Boy: I'm serious
Girl: Have you ever seen yourself in a mirror?
Boy: Yes I had
Girl: What did you see?
Boy: An ugly face
Girl: Why then lock yourself in a room
Boy: I did
Girl: Then why have you come out?
Boy: From a small hole I peeped through
Girl: Then?
Boy: Then I saw you moving freely
Girl: Then?
Boy: Then I thought I must come out
Girl: Come out?
Boy: Yes. When much uglier people are free and accepted by others I see no point fearing from being a discomfort to the human eye.
Karla my dear sister I learned a lesson from my students and from that day I stopped undermining myself and my abilities. Anytime I feet like retreating to a dark room I remember that there are people who perform much worse than I do and who are still accepted by the people so long as they are trying hard to improve their performance. The good news is that great many people including myself cherish your writings and would like one day to write like you. See us first, those who trail behind, before you assess yourself. Thanks Karla

Okay, tough love time. First, you know we appeciate all that you do here and sometimes, I think you forget that. You need to have more faith in your own ability and that is something that none of us can give you through our writings. You have to find that for yourself. Get up in the morning and say, "I'm a darn good poet", look in the mirror and smile. Then, go about your day.
Take me, for example, when I write something, I do so, first and foremost for my own satisfaction. If I am not satisfied with a poem, I rip it up or set it aside for a redo later. It is not until I am completely satisfied that I share it with the world, here at the Den. But, if I receive negative feedback from others, I take it. I consider their opinions --- sometimes correct, other times... I fail to see them. But, in spite of that, deep down.... I am still happy with the poem. Think of it as child rearing --- we conceive the idea, the give birth to it on paper, we tender and raise the idea by writing, re-writing, and re-writing again. Then, we send it off on its own by sharing the poem here.
Find your voice, never criticize it and don't worry about others' opinions of it.
Okay, I'm done. The advice is free. :)

is doubting her writes
she shakes and she trembles
even though she resembles
the Queen of mending the words
of turning pains and hurts
into readable poetry
and so sets all of us free
to explore and find
wonderful places, the kind
that enchant you much
because she does have the Magic Touch
more strength is found in one
of her works when it's done
then an average man can muster
and ends up with jibberish cluster
of words that don't mean anything
like the joy her lyrics can bring
