What some of our Vietnam brothers and sisters endured coming home. I aim to change that, one Veteran at a time: by giving them a hug. By telling them, 'Thank you' for their service and sacrifice. On this 'Welcome Home Vietnam Veteran's Day,' it's my way of restitution, long overdue.

No parades. No honor when
they stepped out of the heat
and humidity of Vietnam and
onto American soil. Angry
fists pumped the air. Lovers
of peace hoisted the flag ---
not ours, but Ho Chi Mihn's.
Spit and thrown drinks wetted
faces, soddened uniforms.
The war was wrong, not the soldiers, they should have spat at the politicians that send them there, the poor slobs suffered and died there in misery, including two of my name sakes. Bless you, your poetry speaks with passion and compassion, well done! Jasmin Horst
Karla, your "Welcome Home" to Vietnam vets is a deed too many Americans never considered. They permitted their opposition to a political affront to try to dishonor the very men and women that gave all there was of them to give in the name of duty and honor to country. I commend you for your righteous compassion for all those men and woman. Regardless of what anyone felt about the cause, no one should have attempted to impugn the honor of our troops. How we treated the Vietnam Veterans is a shame; we ought to be apologizing to them for not giving them the honor that is due. Powerful reminder; thank you for caring, and thank you for YOUR service in the USAF! (I did hug a Vietnam Veteran today, as a matter of fact, and I welcomed him home.)

Those were sad sad days, Karla. As much as I opposed the
Vietnam War (and all war), this vet supported the young men
and women whom we sent into those hate-infested jungles, some
of whom were good friends of mine, and I abhorred the way
they were greeted when they returned home. Will it never end?
For the past two years (2006-2008) The Bridge of Silver Wings has earned a name for itself both as a series of poems published in different e-zines and as a book first published in 2007.

I can't help but wonder how the Russian Troops were greeted back in their homeland after pulling out of Afghanistan after so many years there?
