"I have always felt that the moment when first you wake up in the morning is the most wonderful of the 24 hours. No matter how weary or dreary you may feel, you possess the certainty that .... absolutely anything may happen. And the fact that it practically always doesn't, matters not one jot. The possibility is always there."
- Monica Baldwin
In warm sunlit petals
Of brown earth and desert plain
the light plays words of changing tide
carrying forth a change
Day turned suddenly to night,
I watch the hanging desert wind
keep its distance and roar
The faceless crawls like a snake ready to strike
stone, dirt, debris edged with air and heat
a sword out of its sheath brandishing a dull blade
transformed to a wall of stinging sand particles
piercing my eyes, ears, and nostrils
clamoring for air
you can only scream in silence
and run in place
The music of the wind
indistinct and impenetrable
non-stop screaming of nature
beating a side path for no one
What was said by light and wind
covers the thief who blew and groan
for more victims of the sound
I wanted to make this day full
and normal but the plans have changed
the surface and eyes know better
My memory is certain
the wind is wrapped in cloth
pressing the earth as a paint brush
on canvass full of squalls
....the hanging desert wind
HOLY SMOKE That is a serious haboob! I feel the grittiness, taste the sand in my teeth, with the imagery of your words. Excellent, Myles. You took me there.
Excellent metaphors about the raging wind and sandstorm. This is interesting reading and I certainly was entertained by the wording you used to convey your message.
Until your work came alone I had never read or considered "desert" poetry. You bring the wind and sand, and the purposelessness of it all to the unanimated... almost like Mark Twain did over 100 years ago, about the Mississippi swath across America. This is marvelous and perfect imaging for me. But, like watching the Gorilla in his habitat... It's not for me, but it's fascinating to contemplate. Good work, good friend! - Bill
