Photo taken a few days ago of Mt. St. Helens Volcano in Washington. This view is from The Johnsons Ridge trail, and inspired the poem, I also found it's story a bit metaphoric too.
result remains of recent event geographic evidence of destructive force where pressure builds within the core and finally blows its laden load an earthquake a landslide then an explosion in its path was an ancient forest a lake and rivers now buried beneath it trees toppled and shattered like pick up sticks into walls of mud and pumice ash circles the globe in catastrophic shadow obliterating the sky as fall out drops and the wind blows debris everything dies in the blast zone a quarter century passes and the land evolves cycles and seasons as the earth revolves signs of life return grass and wildflowers insects and creatures new lakes form sprouting cattails, and evergreens natures magical chemistry what was destroyed now flourishes soil rich in nutrients elk and deer are abundant theplanet unleashes power showing our insignificance here today and gone tomorrow then observing her healing nature is a spirit of welcome outcome observing and knowing everything lives in the long run
the planet recreates itself over and over and over ... civilization adheres to it cycles of growth and transformation: dying, growing and tranforming with it ...
