witnessed this red tailed hawk take down a full sized mallard duck this morning...he is a sizeable predator

Poem Artwork

just there to the left of the water bath
and behind the juniper tree
were the remnants of a mourning dove
that earlier, had flown free

its feathers lay in disarray
scattered and tossed
they had been ripped out
and its body consumed

I was neither sad nor content
at natures display, for it is
as has always been
a cycle of life and there is no mercy
you either survive or are eaten

it is only humans that fuss
in our sensible hope to be civilized
it seems we have an inexhaustible supply
to override the system

might as well tell the sun not to rise
and the wind to always remain calm
lay down a hand upon mother earth
and demand she not shake at all

nature is what will never be tamed
it is an energy force unto itself
sharing both calm beauty and terrifying fury
upon which, we humans,
may only gawk

I have to agree with Georg. The animal kingdom kills to eat, while humanity is just plain stupid - killing for no apparent good reason.

I once saw a huge Red Tail grab a cat. He flew up to a tree with the cat still struggling, but not for long. So goes the cycle. Nature is never wrong.

A good poem Mrs. Rosenberg. We have a hawk that dwells in the Eucalyptus trees in our back yard here in La Mesa. I have witnessed his expertise in taking down the birds of his choice several times. I photographed the grissly ordeal once, awhile back, and put one of the images on my poem 'A Predator That Flies Unfettered'

Blessings ...

So true, the great mystery of earth is the ever changing magic of Mother Nature in all of her creations.

The only difference between them and us, is that once they kill for food and eat, they don't go on a rampant killing spree for the heck of it or for the oil in others feathers.

i think that the cycle is best explained by the Native Americans and "The Way" basically survival of the fittest which, for them, applies to humans as well-i enjoyed your write
