Egret, Alone

Beautiful, but something seems amiss.

Poem Artwork

The lone egret worries me.

Two weeks in the marsh, stalking silently

Or hiding beneath the oaks.

Our dogs find the intruder unwelcome,

A target for frenzied barking,

No strangers allowed in their territory.

I wonder if the bird is lost,

Having stopped one mountain range short

Of the sanctuary where the others are.

Or is it injured? It does not seem so,

Unless it’s an injury of the heart,

Birds, people; those hurts few tell

Or know.

I like your poem about the egret. I once had a small pond in my yard with beautiful Koi fish in it. They began to disappear. Once Sunday morning, I looked out and there was the culprit, standing in the pond swallowing fish. It was a heron, not an egret.

He wasn't there today. I hope he flew on to the sanctuary in the next valley away from us.

So very sad. I hope it finds its mate or its family very soon.

Capturing and embracing the moment that rests before you, how brilliant. Sometimes people get lost too, but eventually find their way back....

Be always safe,

I like how you capture the lonely spirit of this beautiful creature and yes it does make one wonder if perhaps it lost its mate and will forever seek her...

Egrets sometimes are in an area called Cape May Point park in extreme southern NJ...tis a place of solitude & peace, a great place to stop on a north to south trip for many bird species & humans find solace there too, like me...e

I loved trips to Florida for Egrets, but now I expect to be quite confined to the North- with Herons.
Much enjoyed.

So authentic and vibrant! Being the Egret, this is an unmistakable feeling I know well, and you have penned this brilliantly.

We had an Egret land on our property last week, quite impressive... Nice pen.
