Why should I go there
To the county fair
Where the air just reeks of
An old gray mare
Where the bearded lady
And the two-headed bear
Think they’re Ginger Rogers
and Fred Astaire?
Besides…
I once had an affair
With a concessionaire
Who’s probably now
On Medicare.
She would like to see me
In the electric chair—
(That’s the hot seat
Not the rocking chair).
Gimme a margarita
At the Prickly Pear
Where the senoritas dance
With a Latin flair.
Of course you gotta be
A millionaire to have
The fare for admission there
And my bank account’s
Like a folded chair
In a sorry state of disrepair.
I’d have to put on airs
And act debonair
The ladies might even
Stop and stare
And that would be
So darned unfair
The other men there
Wouldn’t have a prayer
Against my skills
And savoir faire.
Just gotta get out of
Long term care—
They need me there
At the county fair…
Nurse!!
That's a fine share of rare air... aux contraire, you say? Seriously, though, this is a rhyming masterpiece of rare delight... you take us there... excellent workmanship, mon frere...
Quite a geriatric hoot! I'm not sure exactly what you were driving at, but equating old-age with the county fair is not fair. A couple of years ago I had the opportunity to see Big Tex before he burned up. The smells and sounds brought back memories of my childhood and the place, while gigantic, had all the characteristics that I remember, right down to the cotton candy.
We only had a regional state fair because of our big-time promoter. My brother and I, worked concessions, and even ran one for a couple of years, making little money and not hooking up with any “carney” girls.
What was nice was catching Minnie Pearl, complete with straw hat with a price tag hanging down, in the radio tent talking to a local radio guy with nobody else around except the three of us. Also, the time the big-time country artist who sang, “Dang me, they ought to hang me,” couldn't make it, so they brought in a substitute, Reba McEntire.
I enjoyed this! Charming with old world appeal, cheeky and fun. Not usually a fan of rhyming, but this worked perfectly without any feeling of constraint or ill fit of words to make that happen.
a BLUE Ribbon write...so creative and unique...loved the rhyming rythm...perfect word choices. was a great laughoutloud piece. 3 cheers for this oone edward
Blod Ties - Fantasy, Romance. Romantasy? A bit of whimsy for the weekend. A naive British tourist John Gormley takes a holiday in the ancient, remote kingdom of Perarboria. He does not suspect that his holiday love affair with a local beauty is desti

Afford the fare.
