Mother's Arms

Though you longed
for her arms
around you

your mother

never

held

you

not even
when the wrath
of a wild sudden summer storm
darkened the day
and
terrifying thunder shook the house
and lightning
flashed
and burned
desolate prairie
beyond
your comprehension

you took your blanket
petting a favourite soiled corner of it
and sucking your thumb
you huddled among the dust bunnies
under your bed

you fell asleep
at last
and in your dreams...

...your mother
held
you
in her arms

I held mine all 4 in my arms lots, but at one time I had to leave them, and go get therapy and help - so their Father brought them up, but I'm back into their lives as grownups, now and they all 4 know I love them very much.

I HAVE READ THIS WORK THROUGH TWICE...I DEAR NOT READ IT THROUGH AGAIN, NOT NOW, ANYWAY. SO MANY TIMES WE TRY TO EXPLAIN WHAT WAS MISSING, WHAT WE YEARNED FOR AND DIDN'T HAVE AND NO ONE UNDERSTANDS...WE JUST WANTED HER ARMS, WHETHER WE WERE RIGHT OR WRONG, GOOD OR BAD...WE JUST WANTED TO KNOW THAT COME HELL OR HIGH WATER...SHE STILL LOVED AND CARED, LIKE MOTHERS (TRUE MOTHERS) DO.
THIS WORK HAS HAD A PROFOUND AFFECT ON ME...I HAVE SAVED THIS, REGIS. THANKS YOU FOR SHARING, LOVE AND BLESSINGS,

I lost my mother when I was nine and have no memory of her. I've always felt a deep longing to feel what it was like to have her hold me. This poem touched me deeply.

Very heartbreaking write, not to be held in your mother's arms, It's also hard not to cry with this one. I feel very blessed that even as I grew up my mother still held me in her arms. Everyday when I would leave to go home I always got a kiss and a hug, and now all I have are memories of what that felt like. Outstanding poem Regis.

Love and hugs,
Nancy

'Tis sad to feel 'rejected' by one's mother but being abused, starved and intentionally harmed by nearly everyone connected with 'her' is even worse.

My dear Regis.. I now understand why we say "burst into tears"... reading this, I didn't get a lump, it didn't come in waves... it was sudden and utterly bottomless! Poetry has no rules, no restrictions... all that make us human is poetry in the mind and in the words of a skilled writer... you have moved me... and it seems to be unshakable. The simplicity and the unshadowed truth in this is deep emotion defined. How amazingly sad. What achingly beautiful poetry. katy xox.

Regis,

What can I possibly say here that has not already been said and echoed repeatedly. Perhaps just this.....as THAT child in my own past...I thank YOU for writing this. The deep yearning for that love never ceases, but as Ed M. so aptly points out...we instead find peace through better memories.

One other thought, I am touched that there are others out there who hurt as I do over that loss of love we never had. It does help to know we aren't alone sometimes.

This is so emphatic and simply stated that it is a bullet to the heart and there is no way that it will miss its mark, Regis! What a bold and profoundly moving write this is. Powerful and effective, like the surgeon's knife. We so need it! The pain that's locked inside for many of us needs to be lanced and allowed to be healed, I am sure. I know that inside of my adult body is an unmothered child that is still crying in the dark. So many of us can look "grown up" on the outside but are stunted children still in our psyche. No wonder the world is such a mess - we inhabit an emotional kindergarten! Thank you indeed for this... to acknowledge the truth is at least a start on the road to reconciliation and healing... and many "mothers' arms" await each one of us to redeem what has been so long lost. Bless you. You're a great man, Regis, and a spot-on Poet. You deal in realism... who says you never grew up?! Kate xx
