It’s bad enough to be an unknown writer, but to be an unknown writer at 80 is really bucking the odds. It’s a good thing self publishing is evening the playing field, and allowing Mom an opportunity to make one of her dreams come true – publish a book about her unique life altering WWII experiences.
I’m focusing on age again because I think the fact that Mom will be 80 next week sends a significant message to any senior citizen who ever dreamed of doing the same thing. In an age where seniors are often cast aside, many forget they still have much to offer. Each soul is living history and should be encouraged to write.
Many of you have vested interests in older parents, aunts, uncles, and other aging loved ones. Give them a reason to write! Mom didn’t start writing down her memories until her late 70s!
To pass the time while waiting in her family doctor’s office last week, I asked her to come up with five reasons other men and women her age should write. She really surprised me.
Top 5 Reason’s Seniors Should Write:
1. Exercise Your Mind. If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it!
2. Legacy. Leave your children and future generations something to remember.
3. Positive Focus. Give yourself something positive to focus on that will give you great pleasure, and keep you young. A reason to get out of bed in the morning.
4. Create an Interest in the Past. Life isn’t always about the future! Capture a piece of history from your unique perspective and different life experiences.
5. Send a Message. It’s never too late to do anything. Nothing is impossible!
I won’t lie to you, money was number 6, but it’s not what’s driving her to finish. She has a book that's absolutely fascinating, but I haven’t told her the odds against making money because it’s part of the dream.
Anyone have a spunky senior in their life? Tell them to start writing.
