By C'Rod How would a child react to seeing Hitler for the first time?
I thought Mom's description of her first in person sight of Hitler would be surreal. As the leader of the Third Reich, Hitler had established himself as supreme leader. He had taken on the title of Fuhrer. He was a god-like figure to many. Instead, when I spoke to Mom today, here's how she described seeing Hitler for the first time:
"When I was 10 years old, I saw Hitler for the first and only time. Our soldiers came home victoriously from Poland and there was a beautiful parade Under the Linden (Unter den Linden). Hitler and Goering drove by in a car, then came Goebbels and many cars with generals in them. We were all waving flags and shouting, “Heil Hitler!” or “Sieg Heil!” I remember thinking Hitler was ugly, Goering fat, and Goebbels skinny. All the military Generals looked sharp."
Only a child’s eyes could see things so simply. That's what's so great about her description. The innocence of it is what amazes me the most.
Mom, also admitted, "Hitler was our hero. He gave the German people something to be proud of again. Nationalism, of course, was at its peak when he was in power. He was a master at manipulating the people. Under Hitler's spell, my own Father sported a cropped mustache just like the Fuhrer."
I wonder how children will describe the next man history will consider an anti-Christ?
