The Debate
Today’s musings aren’t going to be about who did what to whom at the second Presidential debate between Governor Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama on October 16, 2012.
Most people today have a pretty low opinion of politicians in general. For the most part I’m one of them.
Yet it was cool to hear about how our issues may be solved, in answer to questions posed from everyday citizens concerned about how each candidate’s platform would affect their daily lives.
Flawed as the system may seem, voting is our opportunity to let our voices be heard. When the pre-election process is over, we’ll be asked to cast our ballots. I recently saw that actress Roseanne Barr is among the list of candidates on the Florida ballot.
What a ridiculous waste it would be to throw away the most important vote we cast every four years.
Some of our frustrated fellow Americans believe that their votes are wasted anyway. After the “hanging chad” incident in Florida during the 2000 Presidential election between Al Gore and George W. Bush, there is far less trust in the outcome of hotly contested races.
Still it’s not an excuse to sit at home and pretend the elections don’t exist.
Men and women have died for over two centuries to defend our right to cast our ballots. If for no other reason we owe it to them as well as each other to vote, and do so judiciously.
“I pledge Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.“
When we stop believing in those words America becomes just another country.
