Middle Age
Things that I find disconcerting about middle age:
Glasses: I used to tell Mom that she was blind as a bat. She held everything out at arm’s length to read the text or needed her glasses to step into the pool. She said “just you wait Miss Smarty Pants. It will happen to you.” It did. The day I turned 40, I was at the eye doctor getting bifocals. I can’t read a simple menu without my glasses-even if there are big pictures of prepared entrees on it. One time my glasses came apart in a darkened movie theatre and you’d think a mouse crawled up my leg-I was a panicky mess.
Typing: In the last few years I’ve been unconsciously typing some words phonetically rather than how they’re really spelled. Since I’m a former spelling bee champ, that particular malady creeps me out a bit.
Senior Coffee: More often than not the kid behind the counter thinks I’m due for a senior discount. Not that I mind the reduced rate, but c’mon. I’m 52 and still look pretty good for my age.
Funeral Services: Suddenly Hubs and I are on a mailing list for “pre-need” offers. Gross.
TV: No one under the age of 30 remembers Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Green Jeans. I mentioned Dancing Bear to a 35 year old and was greeted with a blank stare. She didn’t know who Beaver Cleaver was either. Oh and David Cassidy on the Partridge Family - she had no clue. She vaguely remembers the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles though. I felt sorry for her.
Music: My daughter refers to my music preferences as “fossil fuel.” (It’s interesting to note that she knows all the words to these tunes and seat dances while singing along to them when she’s in my car.)
Twitter: I had no idea how to Tweet effectively until last night. Hash tags? What in the cat hair are hash tags? I didn’t know how to pick up tweets either. People sent me messages three months ago and I thought they’d ignored me when I didn’t hear back. I Googled a “how to” Twitter instruction page, and finally figured out how to use it in the most basic sense.
Menopause: need I elaborate?
Ok, amongst the angst there’s an upside.
I’m a daughter of God the Father and saved by the grace of Jesus.
