Spiritual Meatloaf
I don’t know about you but lately I’ve felt a bit like Chicken Little under a falling sky.
Too much bad news, too many tragedies, too little trust and too little tolerance. I feel like every time I finish watching the news, I want to take a bath.
Tonight, Hubs and I went to Mom’s house for meatloaf. Yep, the world’s best comfort food. Mom didn’t always make good meatloaf. In fact Dad and I used to grimace at the mere thought it ending up on our plates. It jiggled like Jello and had the yum appeal of cold Spam.
I’m happy to report that a few years ago she found a new recipe that takes meatloaf to greater heights than I ever dreamed possible. It’s simply delicious.
Tonight we ate and spoke of old friends, people we knew from church, Christmas…you know. Normal stuff. We had extra helpings, laughed and basked in our love for each other. It felt good, warm and safe.
We needed a sweet time together like that. The world can be a very tough place these days. We’ve all been feeling discouraged, unsettled and even a little afraid.
On the way home I thought of a poem that I wrote in 2005 entitled “The World We Know.” I don’t recall the events that inspired it, but it seems appropriate for those in the path of Hurricane Sandy and the aftermath that may follow her.
Think of it as a little spiritual meatloaf and a reminder that not all is as it appears.
