Ohioana Library Association Annual Awards 11/14/2006 1:50:44 PM
Each year the Ohioana Library Assoc. holds an annual event honoring all the Ohio authors for that specific year. This years event was held Sunday, 11-12-06.
To be perfectly honest, I had no idea who the Ohioana Library Assoc. was, or what they did. I knew it was based in Columbus Ohio as the letter I had just received 10 days earlier was post marked from Columbus,Ohio.
Naturally. after reading what they were about and that I was included in their awards event to be held on 11-12-06, I headed for my handy, dandy, computer to check this out. After learning everything there was to know about Ohioana and that it wasn't just a fluke, or something that you really didn't have to show up for, I began to feel excited and wanted to tell everybody I knew. Of course most said, "Who"? just like I had, but soon learned all about them thanks to me and my ramblings.
Before I knew it my big day arrived. It was being held in the downtown Cincinnati Main Library, in one of the Tower Suites.
Of course some of my family wanted to come, as friends and family were permitted. Needless to say, my guests took up one and a half rows. Nobody seemed to mind as the other attendees brought their own group.
In all, their were 40 Ohio authors being given certificates of recognition for their books. The other authors came from
all over the state of Ohio.
After a few guest speakers they called us, one by one, up to the front of the podium, where a speaker told about our bio's, how we got around to writing our book , how long it took, and if we were in the process of writing another, gave a plug for it too. While we were standing up front of the audience, our book was displayed on a big screen, and a little bit more of info was shown at that time. Each author was talked about for about 3 minutes, and then we were handed the very nice laminated Certificate of Recognition by Ohioana. Every author's family had a special place they could come up to, and take pictures. I won't go into my family taking pictures, lets just say the room was well illuminated when my turn came to go up to the front of the room. I felt like I was walking on a red carpet, and come to think of it, it was a dark red carpet, and the moment can be best described as like the red carpet celebrities walk down and are photographed by the press. I guess, in a way, my family does act like the press, anytime we have family get-to-gethers, there are more cameras than people sometimes. I believe I am the only person who does not have a camera. I used to, but it was the kind where you put in a 10-picture pack, take a picture, it comes out the front of the camera, and you wait 7 or 8 seconds, then peel the black part off and hope it was a good looking picture, then you had to lay it aside to kinda dry..It was too much work..Maybe someday I will want a new camera--everybody I know has those digital cameras, the kind that you can send the pictures you take to your web site and then can e-mail them to others in the families..Well, usually I am the family member who gets pictures mailed to her, by everybody else, then I save what I want, to my pictures folder, etc..
See, I do know how to do that..
After everyone had received their award, you could go into the hospitality room and mingle and look at everybody's books, as they had them on display. Mine was kinda right in the middle. I received lots of compliments about my book covers. A few people inquired where it could be purchased, and I told them how to go to Authors Den and they could buy it there and it would be authographed by me. I also told them how they could read my home page and about how people also wrote articles, stories, poetry and much more there.
The authors were a very interesting group of people and I enjoyed meeting and mingling as we all snacked on little eclairs, cookies, brownies and punch. All in all, I had a very nice time there, felt honored to be in the same group as columnists, editors, authors who had written lots of books, young authors, ages 13, 15 and 17. The range of topics in their books covered travel, a 25-yr follower of Elvis, how-to books, victims of abuse, sports oriented books, childrens books, etc. then there was me and my book.
I know I am rambling again, so I will wrap this up..This kind of recognition, even though it isn't on a grand, much publicized scale, is still an honor to anyone who is lucky enough to be invited to participate and be introduced to an audience of authors, who will treat you just like you are REALLY one of them.
