MY BIG PLANS FOR NEW YEARS EVE, 2006 12/30/2006 1:56:30 PM
How a grandma is going to bring in the New Year 2007..
My New Years Eve Party will probably start around 7PM
on Sunday night, December 31st, 2006.
I will arrive at my daughter and son-in-laws beautiful
home and be lovingly greeted by them along with the sound
of running feet coming from the upstairs bedrooms and
more coming up the steps from the family room.. "Baba's
here, Baba's here" will be heard for about 5 minutes until
all the owners of the running feet and yelling voices have
been properly hugged and kissed and settled down.."What
did you bring, Baba?" will be heard next..Then the noise
of the opening of the bags and came along with me into the
house..Out will come the party hats for 6, leis for 6, some
noisemakers, confetti, snacks, fake champaign(apple)
along with the proper plastic glasses for toasting at
midnight, potato chips and dip, etc..Just what a normal
babysitting Grandma would know to bring when spending the
New Years Eve with 4 loving children, from ages 12 to
age 3&1/2...
Soon parents are hugged and kissed out the door, with
promises of calls to check in later..
Now the party will begin..The kids run, they never walk,
and bring out the paper bowls and paper plates, and the
drinks of pepsi or coke or sprite, which are only for
tonight, as the parents have strict no lots of sugar
rules..I just nod my head when they talk about how much
sugar should be given to them, and smile, because I know
that tonight all rules will not be followed, and so do
my daughter and her husband..for it is either no me to
babysit, or the no-sugar rule..guess who won??
We keep the TV on of course, to follow the descending
ball at Times Square, while we play different card games
or board games. This too shall pass quickly..Out come the
gameboys, the MP3 players, and other electrical or plug in ear type games for 1 person only.. Well, Grandma has packed
her own electronic sudoku crossword puzzle thingamajig,
so between games and snacking, and short breaks for the
bathroom or a phone call, we are all happy..
Now it is around 10pm and the pizza arrives..some tummies
are too full, so some eat some save for later, which will
wind up being tomorrow..Soon it is 11pm and the hats are
quickly put on heads, leis already are around our necks,
it is decided that the pop should go in the champagne
glasses, because no one particularly liked apple juice
anyway. So that is settled..By this time the youngest is already wanting to rest his head on my lap, but does not
want to miss anything this year..he will be the first to
take off his hat as he cannot get comfortable with it on.
By this time, everybody is in their pj's, stomachs full,
glasses half empty of pop, just enough left for our
toast, pillows all over the floor and couches, bodies
getting really relaxed and it is almost 11:50..Hurried
runs to the bathroom occur when the time is announced..
The kids will all want to sit together real close to each
other, with their toast glasses in their hands as the ball
descends down..when it gets to 10,9,8,7,6,5..everybody
stands up, 4,3,2,1..then we will toot our tooters and throw
a little confetti (as I am the one who will have to pick
it up afterwards)..We all hug and kiss and say Happy New
New Year to each other..Then the outside fireworks will
start, and everybody will run to the front windows, and
pull up the venetian blinds for all the subdivision to see
us in our pj's, neighbors will wave at us and we'll wave back at them.
Then we run to the back bay windows where the same process
is repeated..more neighbors out and more waving..kids see
who the other kids are, that have made it up to midnight.
After about 10 minutes of this, there is a migration up
the stairs to all of their bedrooms, with the excuse they
are just going up there to watch some TV..Sure, 4 kids in
separate bedrooms, all deciding at 12:45am on New Years Day,
2007, at the same time, they just want to watch TV in bed..
I will give them half an hour and all will be done in. Then
I will carefully check out each of them, turn off their
TV's, and make sure they are all snug and covered up..
Then I will go into my daughters huge king size bed and
start to read the good book I had brought with me, but that
will be the last thing I will remember until morning.this
I am sure of.
Such interesting and exciting plans I have, and wouldn't
change them for the world...
