MORE TECHNOLOGY LESS FINANCIAL GRADS 10/5/2008 7:36:13 AM
United States where a finance is more attractive as a major in college than engineering. The film, The Graduate, has a scene where Dustin Haufman is confronted by a cocktail sipper who expounds on the value of a career in PLASTICS. That was the 60's...fast forward beyond Mrs. Robinson to the 80's & 90's where a lucrative career in finance with visions of Wall Street to the graduate surpass that of sugar plumbs and anything close to a degree in an engineering dicipline.
So what's happened to our country...colleges like Massachusets Intitute of Technology (MIT) and others like it are made up of a majority of foreign students (primarily Asian & Indian) while Wharton, Babson and the coveted Harvard Business school harowed halls bulge at the seems with American students lanqishing on a get rich quick Wall Street dream of passing mortgage paper or creating mergers and the like. I have my own dream: I'd like to see more college graduates bent over their laptop computers designing better mouse traps than passing worthless paper around the world and having no idea of the impact of their end product.Like the financial disaster now facing this country. Math is a true science...Finance is NOT.
We need technology in America and for it to stay here and not be exported to India & Asia. We need math & science to be upgraded and made more attractive to elementary and high school students. We need this influx of Wall Street fake money makers to be reduced in numbers so their lap tops don't buy & sell useless paper in micro-seconds. We need research & developement by engineers to expand our manufacturing base. We need the Harvard Business School and the Whartons to stress business ethics along with bottom line greed like that of a Tyco CEO or one from Enron. And maybe, just maybe this country will be as good as it can be once again.
