THE EGG 10/21/2008 7:53:04 AM
IS POSSESSION NINE TENTHS OF THE LAW IN MAINE? A new neighbor from Maine moved next door to a well established New Hampshire Republican. The New Hampshire man had a renegade chicken who would lay her eggs all over the yard, instead of in her hen house nest. One day she layed an egg that rolled into the ex-Mainer's property while he was mowing his lawn. The former downeasterner stopped mowing, picked up the egg, and headed for his house.
Well lo and behold therenegade chicken owner observed the heist from his back porch Adirondack chair and immediately set out to visit his new neighbor and give him a piece of his mind while retrieving his egg.
A sharp wrap on the ex-mainers door was answered abruptly. He said, "and what can I do for you?"
"I saw you take an egg that belongs to me."
"Ayah, I did that, but it don't belong to you anymore."
The New Hampshireite was taken a back by his answer and said, "Why do you think MY egg belongs to you?"
His answer, "Because where I come from, up Damascotta way, if an egg, or anything else for that matter, rolls into a fella's yard it belongs to him. Possession is nine tenths of the law in Maine."
The 'Live Free or Die' native stroked his chin and thought about that one tenth remaining. Then said, "Okay, in New Hampshire we have a way of settling ownership disputes."
"Hows that work?" the Mainer asked.
"Well, I knee you as hard as I can...south of the belt line between your legs and then you can do the same. Who ever moans or yells out in pain does not get the egg."
"My, that's a very strange way to settle ownership, but since I'm new here and want to be accepted, I'll go along with your tradition."
The New Hampshire man extends a very sharp blow with his knee to the place atheletes protect with a steel cup. The Mainer bends over in excrusiating pain, but does not cry
out.
After a few minutes the Mainer regains his composure and says, "Ayah, now it's my turn to knee you in the impossible."
The ex-Mainer"s NH neighbor walks out the front door and over his shoulder he says, "KEEP THE DAMN EGG."
