A BEER IN THE ROSE GARDEN 7/31/2009 5:35:18 AM
Okay, it was a nice gesture to invite Professor Gates and Sergeant Crowley to the White House for a beer. Was it ethnic profiling to suggest that a glass of beer would entice a Boston Irishman to board the Boston/Washington shuttle for the sake of presidential diplomacy? What if the Vice President had suggested, in a loose cannon moment, that a cold watermellon grace the table? Would that be an ethnic profiling gesture equal to the one meant to entice Crowley?
What if Crowley had gone against the president's invitation and said something like?, "Mr. President, I really don't drink beer...I'd rather have a Margarita." Would that have changed the thrust of the president's attempt to turn the Rose Garden into a Beer Garden? Would that meeting between the two gentlemen with opposing views about that issue of racial profiling be the same?
Would five Irish Pubs in Boston close for lack of patrons? Would the bar at Margaritaville have an upward surge in sales?
Another point: Here we have the two leaders of the free world imbibing in an alcohol laced drink or perhaps a non-alcohol drink. In any case their image was cast in foam. Even though they made a lot of sobering grabs at the peanut bowl. What if Iran or North Korea decided to pounce at that moment? Could our two world leaders grasp the "football",drop the peanuts, put down their mugs to alert our military in time?
I ask you...
