Congress Gets Another Raise 1/4/2009 10:00:42 AM
Where is the outrage when merit raises are given to congress when there is no merit to reward? In 2009 the senators & congressmen of this United States will get another raise of $4700.00 for each. This raise comes automaticaly each year without any vote or discussion in the senate or house. This brings the anual salary for each congressman & senator up to $174,000 a year...combined with other perks it most likely reaches $200,000, not counting an all paid for health insurance plan. The total of their raises this year approaches $3,000,000, a drop in the bucket when you consider that shareholders have lost $7 trillion in wealth and millions of people are out of work...401k and IRA accounts for the middle class have dwindled and the federal budjet deficit has passed 10 trillion. Oh, and there's a $750 billion bailout about to kick in at the expense of taxpayers.
Where's the outrage? The same senators and congressmen who are supposed to watch over this countries business & finances have failed to do so and they are rewarded with a raise. How many working Americans get raises when their performance is below par?
During another depression in the 1930's the congress of the United State took a salary cut totaling 15 percent. They most likely thought it their morale obligation to do so when so many of their constituents were out of work. Where are the morals of todays congressmen? Are they caught up in the government/ wall street complex intent only on their own portfolios. Where is the ethical standards of the 30's gone? No senator or congressman has come forth to the American people to explain their raises away. They're too busy not doing the business of this country to do so.
